Negatives Effects Of Glutamine Powder

Glutamine supplement is also available individually or within a protein supplement, normally as capsule, liquid, powder, or tablet. The issue with glutamine powder is the addition of fillers, an ingredient added to provide dietary fiber, bulk or some other non-nutritive purpose. These fillers can cause negative effects of glutamine powder.

Products like corn and corncobs, feathers, soy, cottonseed hulls, peanut hulls, citrus pulp, screening, weeds, straw, and cereal by-products are often included as inexpensive fillers. Most of the fillers used are common allergens and is not very well tolerated by the most highly allergic individuals. It is also believed that low-grade fillers actually aggravate the intestinal walls instead of promoting health, and that some individuals are not able to successfully digest vegetable matter.

Moreover, pure protein powder is actually tasteless. Since, any tasteless supplement will not encourage people to try them again, companies add flavorings, sugars, salt, artificial sweeteners, colorings, preservatives or salicylates to make them taste like strawberries, chocolate etc. These additives defeat the very purpose of consuming glutamine powder supplement.

Glutamine powder supplements need to be carefully stored in a cool and dry place. This is because moisture leads to breakdown of this amino acid, which may cause the product to become toxic. Moreover, heat too destroys this amino acid. Hence, it is advised not to add glutamine powder to hot beverages.

According to few research studies, patients given nutritional formulas (total parenteral nutrition) containing glutamine developed elevated liver enzymes, a sign of liver toxicity. When the glutamine was removed from the nutritional formulas, the liver enzymes of the patients returned to normal levels. Also, individuals sensitive to monosodium glutamate (MSG) need to avoid glutamine supplements, since the body can convert glutamine into glutamate. For this same reason, people with epilepsy or bipolar disorder should use glutamine supplements with extreme caution.
