Complementary medicinal practices can be defined as those theories and practices that are not a part of conventional medical system.

Some of these procedures include Yoga, Acupuncture, and Hypnosis, Leboyer’s method, Sophrology, Haptonomy, Music therapy, Homeopathy, Massage therapy, Hydrotherapy, Aromatherapy and Herbal medicine. Many of these procedures are in vogue since ages and have been found to be effective in reducing labor pain.

Hypnosis: This is a unique approach where a pregnant woman is made to focus on decreasing awareness of pain, fear and anxiety by means of words and suggestions made by the therapist. Studies have found that hypnosis is indeed useful in reducing labor pain and that patients have a greater sense of control over painful contractions occurring at the time of child birth.

Yoga: This is an ancient Indian practice that preaches on the control of mind and the body. According to Yoga practitioners, there are different yoga postures and breathing practices that are helpful in reducing labor pain, shortening the duration of labor and reducing the requirement of any analgesic medication.

Sophrology: This is an ancient Greek method that was derived from Indian Yoga. Sophrology also uses similar principles as like yoga and is known to reduce labor pain. Patients have experienced a higher degree of satisfaction and relaxation at the time of delivery.

Acupuncture: This is an ancient Chinese method of treating ailments. This method is based on stimulating specific anatomic parts of the body using needles, heat, pressure, magnetic impulse, electrical stimulation and burning by a preparation of the herb Artemia Vulgaris. These parts are known as acupuncture points or acupuncture loci. Acupuncture is a time consuming procedure requiring pregnant woman to remain still for 15-30 minutes. Beneficial effects of acupuncture in reducing labor pain have always remained controversial.

Herbal Medicine: This alternative medicinal approach can be described as use of plant materials and their derivatives for therapeutic purposes. Different herbal preparations are useful in preparing the uterus and cervix for childbirth and reducing labor pain during pregnancy.

Aromatherapy: Aromatic oils are essential in providing relaxation to body and mind and reduce anxiety and stress. However, these oils have been found to be effective in reducing labor pain. A gentle massage around the lower back with aromatic oils derived from jasmine, juniper, geranium, rose and lavender can ease the pain during pregnancy.
