Paxil To Citalopram

Depressive disorder or simply depression is a psychiatric disorder affecting more than 20 million people in the United States. Depressive disorders in humans are one of the oldest recognized medical illnesses.

However, advancements in pharmacology and medical science have developed effective treatments for depression that involve use of antidepressants. Different classes of antidepressant drugs are available in the market that includes MAOIs, tricyclics and SSRIs. Among these, SSRIs are the most widely prescribed antidepressants in many countries as these are considered to be more effective involving least side effects. SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors act by inhibiting the reuptake of neurotransmitter serotonin into the pre-synaptic cell, thereby resulting in an increased extracellular concentration of serotonin in the synaptic gap.

Paxil and Citalopram are two most important SSRIs used to treat depression and anxiety disorders.

Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, Paxil is the fifth-most prescribed antidepressant drug in the United States. Introduced in the year 1992, Paxil is an orally-administered psychotropic medication consisting of Paroxetine hydrochloride as an active ingredient. Paxil is prescribed for the treating symptoms related to depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, anxiety disorder, social phobia and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Another antidepressant SSRI that is widely used to treat depression is Citalopram or Celexa. This drug was originally manufactured by Lundbeck and was approved by FDA in the year 1998. As with Paxil, Citalopram is also used to treat different psychiatric diseases that include obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, premenstrual dysphoric syndrome and posttraumatic stress disorder. Different generic versions of this drug are currently available in the market with different brand names.

Symptoms and precautions of paxil and citalopram are similar to other antidepressant drugs. Both these drugs should not be prescribed to pregnant and lactating mothers as these can cause abnormalities in new born child. Paxil and Citalopram should not be taken with any of the monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor class of drugs. Side effects of Paxil and Citalopram include nausea, dry mouth, vomiting, excessive sweating, headache, tremors, drowsiness, and sleep disorders.
