Calcium is an element which was discovered by Sir Humphrey Davy in 1808. It comes in many natural forms like gypsum, fluorite and limestone. Some of the uses of calcium are mentioned below:
Some of the uses of calcium in everyday life:
- Calcium chloride is used for de-icing and drying in industries like steel, glass and cement.
- Calcium sulfate is used in making common chalk used for writing on black boards and in preparing plaster of Paris.
- It is used to clean non-ferrous alloys owing to its affinity to sulfur and oxygen.
- It is used in processes like de-oxidization, de-sulfurizarion and de-carbonization of many ferrous and non-ferrous alloys.
- Calcium hypochlorite is used to disinfect swimming pools and as a bleaching agent in preparing deodorants.
- It is used for making cement, lime, bricks, glass, paint, sugar, paper, glazes and so on.
- Alloys of aluminum, copper, beryllium, magnesium and lead require calcium as an alloying agent.
- Calcium sulfate is used as a bleaching agent in textiles and paper pulp.
- Calcium silicate is used for reinforcing rubber.
Uses of calcium in our body are:
- Proper growth and health of bones; proper functioning of nerves and muscles.
- Maintaining a healthy heart.
- It prevents rickets in children and assists in improving clotting of blood.
- It prevents osteoporosis especially in women and appearance of stones in the kidney.
For people between 19 to 50 years, 1000 mg of calcium should be included in the daily diet. In the form of calcium carbonate, it is available in egg shells and shells of mollusks. It is essential for growth and good health of plants too.
