Organic Source Of Calcium

Organic Source Of Calcium

Calcium is an essential mineral which is required by human body for various reasons, the most important amongst them being building and maintaining healthy bones and teeth. Adequate levels of calcium prevent occurrence of osteoporosis. They are essential for healing of wounds, maintenance of tissues and cells and for assisting in blood clotting.

Calcium also helps controlling blood pressure, transmission in nerves, releasing neuron-transmitters, production of various enzymes and hormones for regulation of digestion, metabolism of fat and energy. It is required for contraction of muscles and transmission of ions across membranes of cells.

The human body would require almost 1000 mg of calcium per day for performing various functions. Reduction in the levels from the food intake will result in the body making good this deficiency by absorbing calcium from the bones causing a condition called ‘osteoporosis’. Certain varieties of food that contain oxalic acid like rhubarb or spinach will prevent such absorption. Consumption of non-organic or processed dairy products or meat depletes calcium levels in bones resulting in weakness, onset of many diseases, fractures, arthritis or osteoporosis.

Organic sources of calcium include vegetables like green leafy veggies, bean sprouts, green peas, sprouted corn, carrot juice and green juice. Extracts of ‘Terminalia arjuna’ which is an herbal plant found mostly in Asia is also a rich source of naturally available calcium.

Since all calcium requirements can not be made good from natural food sources alone, supplements from non-organic and non-living sources like oyster-shell, egg-shell or chalk can be ingested, but these will not be able to provide nutritional requirements like food sources.
