It has been observed that a major percentage of the American population is deficient in omega 3 fatty acid forms, DHA and EPA. Since these fatty acids are cardinal for the healthy development of the brain; their dearth in the body could result in medical conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and depression.

Although omega 3 is important for the human body, it is advisable to consume them in moderation to avoid certain medical repercussions. The recommended dosage of omega 3 fatty acids as per medical experts is 1 to 2 grams per day for adults. This amount can be obtained either by incorporating fish in one’s meals, twice or thrice in a week or by consuming 1 or 2 fish oil pills of the potency of 1000 milligrams. Fish oil supplements are the most commonly suggested form of omega 3 fatty acids supplements in the US as they are believed to contain the highest percentage of DHA and EPA fatty acids.

Despite their positive influence on health, fish oil supplements have certain side effects as well. These supplements are known to have an effect similar to the intake of aspirin that is thinning of blood. Although this may prove to be a bonus for some individuals as the free flow of thinner blood protects the heart vessels from clogging, the same may pose problems for those on anti-coagulation drugs. Some variants of these supplements may also lead to burping, bloating feeling, giddiness or gas problems. However, fish oil supplements also display some positives as in enhancing the retention power and decrease in body swelling. One must also be cautious of choosing a reliable brand of the fish supplements in order to avoid any complications owing to high percentage of mercury in them. Cod liver oil pills are not considered good options as omega 3 fatty acid supplements since the high proportion of Vitamin A in them could result in liver problems and fracturing of bones.
