Vegans are people who are strictly vegetarian and do not consume any dairy products or eggs or honey. Since the vegans do not consume dairy products, they may need to look for other products that may provide adequate amino acids to their body.
Amino acids are the smaller units that make up Proteins. It is believed that there are a total of twenty amino acids out of which eight amino acids cannot be made by the body and hence, one needs to obtain it from the food that is eaten.
These amino acids are isoleucine, threonine, lysine, tryptophan, leucine, methionine, valine and phenylalanine. Since proteins are generally associated with non vegetarian food such as eggs, meat etc., there may be an assumption that vegans may not be getting the required amino acids. However this is not the case.
Vegans can eat a variety of plant protein sources. Vegans can get amino acids from various foods such as grains, pulses, nuts, vegetables, cheese, muesli and rice. By eating a balanced diet of plant foods one can get all the essential amino acids. Dietary proteins generally have all the essential amino acids. When two different types of proteins are combined then they cover up all the essential amino acids for the vegans. There may be some food which may have less of one amino acid, but if the vegans can choose a well combined diet of grains, pulses, nuts and vegetables, they can be assured of getting all amino acids required for the body.
It has been proven that vegan diets contain the ideal amount of protein (amino acids) as per the World Health Organization requirement.
