Eating variety of nutritious foods will help to keep a 5 year old healthy. Choosing a diet with plenty of grain products, vegetables and fruits that provides all essential nutrients is advisable. An average of 22 grams of protein per day is required for a five-year-old child. Since calcium is crucial for the development of bones and protein helps in weight gain, these two nutrients should not be ignored for a 5 year old.
Emphasize should be that foods with a lot of fats, oils and sweets be used sparingly. Providing with healthy choices and allowing experimentation will help in a long run. Too much milk or juice should be avoided so that the child feels hungry for solids. Forcing the child to eat in absence of appetite is not a healthy way to follow.
Even if the child is not eating a nutritious and well-rounded diet, as long as the growth is normal and has a normal energy level, there is nothing to worry about. Most of the children do not usually eat a balanced diet. But their diet will usually get balanced during the course of time.
