We are not lucky enough to enjoy a stress free and disease free like our ancestors. The due credit for this may be because of our eating habits, our lifestyle or any other external factor. One can find people suffering from many diseases. Some diseases take longer to heal and some may heal faster.
In some cases, though the condition may improve the patient might be required to take medication to keep his condition normal. Such illnesses are known as chronic illnesses, where there is problem which may last the whole life and which is controlled with the help of medication.
Some examples of chronic illness are diabetes, cancer, asthma, heart disease and kidney disease. Chronic illness does not mean that it is the end of the road for these patients. They can also lead better and healthier lives if they can, in collaboration with the doctor, identify their main problem and work together towards addressing the problem through proper planning. They need to take interest in their treatment and be present for regular follow ups as this can help in monitoring the status of the patients and identify new complications, if any. Clinical examples of acute illness include colds, coughs, ear infections and PMS.
Depending on the type of the illness you may even have to be dependent on others for one’s needs and this may give rise to negative feelings like depression, frustration etc. and it might help to seek the intervention of a counselor to help one get rid of such feelings and inculcate a positive approach towards life. Patients with chronic illness should keep one thing in mind that is half the battle is lost if there is no positive approach to the treatment.
