In sudden hearing loss, your hearing is reduced by more than 30 decibels over a minimum of three continuous frequencies and this hearing loss occurs over 72 hours or less. Sudden hearing loss is seen more often in people between the age of 30 years and 60 years and it tends to affect both males and females equally. Although the name is sudden hearing loss, the loss occurs over few hours.
Sudden hearing loss affects different people differently. While some people may suffer from tinnitus or vertigo, there are others who suffer from both the symptoms. The worse part is that sudden hearing loss can be permanent.
Some of the causes of sudden hearing loss are as follows:
- There are certain drugs known as ototoxic drugs that cause damage to the ears. If you take these drugs for a long period of time, they can cause sudden hearing loss.
- Sometimes the perilymphatic fluid in the ear leaks out and this can happen when a person strains, does strenuous physical activity or is exposed to sudden changes in pressure. This leakage leads to sudden hearing loss.
- Injury or trauma to the head can cause sudden hearing loss.
- Viral infection of the inner or middle ear can also cause this type of hearing loss.
- Endocrine disorders can lead to sudden hearing loss.
