Breast augmentation is a common plastic surgery procedure that is performed by plastic surgeons all over the world. Women would like to look and feel better and breast augmentation is one procedure they choose to help them in their endeavor.

Women seeking breast augmentation come from higher socio-economic status and are distressed about their appearance and have also experienced teasing. They also have low levels of self esteem compared to the general population.

Saline breast implants are made up of silicone elastomer shell filled with a sterile saline solution. There are variations in shell surface such as smooth or textured and also in volume, shell thickness, profile and shape. Most are filled with the saline solution at the time of surgery. But there are prefilled saline implants also available. The saline solution has to conform to United States Pharmacopoeia of normal physiological saline with a concentration of 0.15M and a pH of 7.2 to 7.4. If the implant ruptures, the body will be able to absorb the saline just lie water.

Breast implant is not a lifetime device. It has limited life span. It will age and wear out and rupture due to injury from a fall. The implant may last only for a short time. The risk of experiencing implant problems is more after 8 to 10 years of surgery. If the implant has ruptured and leaked, this gives rise to change in the size of the breast. The breast will get smaller. The implant will deflate like a balloon that has lost air. This is a clear indication that the saline solution has leaked out. The solution is absorbed in the body and it passes out as part of urine. Mammogram and ultrasound are diagnostic tools available to identify a leaking implant.
