History Of Architecture

The history of architecture marks out the major changes that took place in the architectural history of different periods in different countries across the globe. The roots of ancient architecture go back to many thousands of years. It reflects the evolution of the remarkable designs of structures and buildings that functioned as a signpost to distant civilizations, like the renowned Tower of Babel of the Phoenicians and the implausible architecture of the Egyptian tombs and pyramids.

The work of Imhotep, an Egyptian pharoah and a great architect, was the first remarkable piece of architecture documented in the history. The complex was built during 2630 BC - 2611 BC and named after Egyptian King Djoser.

What remains from the most diverse architecture serves as a landmark for the most diverse, remote civilizations, cultures, and traditions around the globe. The history of mankind is incomplete without a mention of the architectural evolution. Many structures from the ancient civilizations, like the Great Wall of China and the Great Pyramid of Giza, exist till date as magnificent gems of architecture.

As time progressed, all the architectural designs and constructions started to acquire certain special characteristics, now identified as Architectural Styles, representing different eras. For instance, three main styles were identified during different periods in ancient Greece -- Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. Although the Roman architecture was highly influenced by the Greek styles, it also incorporated some unique features like the ones highlighted in the Via Apia in Rome and other structures of Italy and Great Britain. Most of the architectural forms around the world are broadly categorized into major styles or orders, such as the Gothic, Romanesque, Renaissance, and Churrigueresque.

The history of architecture was also greatly influenced by several economic, socio-cultural, politic, and economic factors that existed throughout the centuries. For instance, the Roman architecture flourished only after the fall of the Roman Empire. From Baroque to Art Nouveau, an assorted amalgamation of these magnificent buildings, public structures, and homes present their past to the world through different architectural styles. As time advances, the shape, style, forms, materials, methods, and goals of architecture continue to change, but the incredible work of the great architects will enthrall generations to come.
