Recovering From Tummy Tuck Surgery

There are many factors that influence a person's recovery from a tummy tuck surgery. Some of the factors that affect the recovery include the person's health and fitness levels prior to the surgery, the kind of tummy tuck done and how well the person adheres to the post-operative care guidelines.

Recovering from a tummy tuck surgery takes time as it is a surgery where a lot of skin is removed and the muscles are tightened. Hence, no one should think that recovery will take just a few days. If you have a tummy tuck, you will need a minimum of 7 to 14 days to begin day-to-day activities. However, sometimes, the recovery time may be a month or 4 weeks. It will still take several more weeks before the person begins to feel normal. If the person was in good health prior to the surgery, the recovering period will be shorter.

Recovering from a tummy tuck requires the person to also take certain measures. In the initial week of the surgery, the person will have swelling, discomfort and pain. This can be handled with proper medication. The person will have a tube inserted in the tummy to drain away the fluids and to help the swelling. He or she will need to take complete bed rest for a few days after the surgery. However, the doctor will advise you when to begin walking and you should follow this advice as it will prevent blood clots from forming. After around 5 to 7 days, the stitches are removed.

For many weeks after the stitches are removed, you will have to wear compression clothes to aid the healing process. This reduces the chances of blood clots forming in the legs. After about a week, you can start with light exercises. Usually, the doctor will suggest walking. Exercise will help to bring down the swelling, strength the body and the immune system and prevent formation of clots. Strenuous exercise will not be allowed for the first 6 weeks.
