Grandchildren can be physically and mentally taxing for grandparents. People get old by the time they become grandparents and they do not retain the same energy levels and vigor that they had as parents themselves. Even performing simple tasks like feeding the child or lifting him can be extremely strenuous physically.
It is actually unfortunate for a grandparent if they have to bring up a toddler who is handful. Children have various demands and they require a lot of running around to be done. Several grandparents who manage young children or babies complain of hip and back pain. Some people even have had fractures of hip or arms while lifting their grandchildren. Grandparents should be more careful; and should know when to stop.
Usually people in their old age are more patient and tend to give in too easily. However, they should realize that their age brings in too many limitations. A child who is persistent and adamant that he or she wants to be carried needs to be told that they cannot be carried for the simple reason that the grandparent is too old and the child is too heavy for them. Children are sensible enough to understand and they will understand if you say no sternly. This applies to toddlers too. In the case of a baby, it is lot different as they do not cry for them to be picked up usually. A grandparent has to find alternative means like placing the child in a bouncer or a rocker when they cry. However, if a grandparent has to learn proper mechanics of lifting his or her grandchild so that the stress on the muscles is minimized and hip pain does not occur. The grandparents will also benefit from doing regular exercise to help with the mental and physical stress of rearing a child.
