Painful periods are called dysmennorrhea and it is also commonly referred to as cramps. Many women have cramps during their periods and even teenage girls go through it. What causes cramping during periods? A hormone called prostaglandin is released by the ovaries and the main function of this hormone is to cause contractions for the egg to be expelled.
In case of a pregnant woman, the prostaglandin causes the contractions and causes the baby to come out. When prostaglandin is secreted in excess, it causes cramping in the abdomen area. Prostaglandin is made in the uterus walls as a response to the pressure experienced by it.
Another reason why prostaglandin is produced in excess is when there is a hormonal imbalance and estrogen and progesterone are not being produced in proportionate volumes. This can happen to women in premenopause stage and they are highly likely to experience periods-like cramps without actually menstruating.
Perimenopause cramps can be treated using birth control pills and also some antispasmodial tablets. They can also be treated naturally using herbal medications. Also what most women do when they have craps is just pop in ibuprofen tablets which eventually give relief. If the cramps become a regular feature, then one should not take ibuprofen every time it comes. The best way to treat the cramps is to take natural herbs that control the production of prostaglandin and automatically cause the cramps to stop. Usually one herbal treatment has the ability to cure several problems related to the hormones in the body.
