Kidney Disease And Elderly And Exercise

Kidney disease among the elderly is a growing problem in the US and it is caused due to number of reasons. The elderly get kidney disease due to diabetes, aging or hypertension besides many other factors. One of the most common kidney diseases in the US among elderly is chronic kidney disease.

The US has a high number of elderly patients who have end stage renal disease and the only option for them is renal replacement therapy. However, one of the reasons that many elderly face renal problems is because they are sent late to a nephrologist for treatment and many times because of their age, treatment is not given out of fear that they will not be able to withstand it.

However, elderly with kidney disease can improve the quality of their lives through exercise. When an elderly person has a kidney disease, he or she tends to be less active. This can have the opposite effect as the muscles grow weaker and the body becomes more vulnerable to illnesses. And there is enough evidence to show that exercising can improve the life of an elderly person who has kidney disease.

It is advised that an elderly person with kidney disease should exercise 3 times a week on non-consecutive days. In addition, they should work towards exercising for 30 minutes each time. Initially the entire 30 minutes will not be possible so they need to work towards it gradually.

Before starting an exercise routine, it is best to consult your doctor who can tell you whether the exercise program is suitable for your age and kidneys.
