There are many supporters of stem cell research, especially those people who are suffering from a debilitating condition like Alzheimer's disease. In fact, even their families are showing interest as there has been some talk about stem cells and Alzheimer's disease cure.
In the present time, Alzheimer's disease cannot be cured. Only certain medications can be given to a patient to slow down the progress of the disease provided it is diagnosed at an early stage. So, stem cell research comes as a life line to people suffering from Alzheimer's.
However, stem cells and Alzheimer's is also a hotly debated topic. Presently, the research is showing more potential for curing diseases like diabetes and Parkinson's. However, there are some scientists who are optimistic that in the future stem cells could help to treat and cure Alzheimer's. However, there are other scientists who feel that stem cells cannot be viewed as a cure for Alzheimer's.
On the whole, the science and research community feels that stem cells cannot be used to treat Alzheimer's, and as a result there is no too much enthusiasm to pursue to line of research at the moment.
Stem cells are a kind of cells that can form themselves into any type of tissue in the human body. This gives the cells a unique ability that can be used by the medical fraternity to patch up cells that are injured, destroyed or not functioning properly. For instance, stem cells can be used to develop healthy tissue in a heart that is injured. However, stem cell therapy holds maximum promise for spinal cord injuries, Parkinson's disease and diabetes.
Where Alzheimer's is concerned, the stem cells would be required to create new brain cells, and this process is extremely complicated and complex. Hence, the viability of the therapy for Alzheimer's is debatable. However, those scientists who are doing research on stem cells and Alzheimer's opine that in the future there could be a possible cure for the disorder by using embryonic stem cells, but it is still a long way to go before this could become a reality.
