Dementia can be caused due to a number of diseases and factors. However, all types of dementia affect a person adversely and cause decline in the person's cognition and intellect. There are over 50 conditions that can result in different types of dementia. However, the most common types of dementia are mentioned below.

Types of Dementia:
Dementia Due To Alzheimer's Disease: This is the most common type of dementia with nearly seventy-five percent of cases having dementia due to Alzheimer's disease. This is a progressive condition and there is no treatment available to reverse or stop the progress of the dementia and the disease. However, if the condition is diagnosed in the early stages, steps can be taken to ensure that the person can maintain his or her independence for a longer duration of time.

Vascular Dementia: This kind of dementia occurs after a person suffers from multiple strokes that are not very serious in nature. However, this type of dementia has an adverse effect on the person's cognition and memory.

Pick's Disease: In this condition, the person's behavior, personality and orientation is altered significantly. It more common among women and has a tendency to develop at a young age.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease: This is the human version of the mad cow disease and it tends to progress really fast affecting involuntary movements and mental functioning.

Parkinson's Disease: This is another neurological disorder that affects the central nervous system. It is also progressive in nature and dementia develops just in the later stages of the disease.

Huntington's Disease: This is an inherited disorder that tends to develop during the middle years of a person.

Lewy Body Disease: This disease is quite similar in nature to Alzheimer's, especially where the symptoms are concerned. The person will suffer from hallucinations, delusions and paranoia.

Alcohol Related Dementia: This kind of dementia occurs due to excessive consumption of alcohol. The only way to stop the progress of this dementia is to stop drinking completely.
