Astigmatism is a very common eye problem among children and adults. However, it is also one of the easiest conditions related to the eye that can be corrected by eyeglasses, contact lens or surgery. Astigmatism is a condition that is caused by curvature of the cornea. It causes refraction in the eye, and needs immediate treatment.
Actually every person suffers with certain amount of astigmatism. The human eye is in natural spherical shape, and when light enters through the eyeball, it takes a normal refraction curve. It creates a clear view of the object in the eye. However, a person suffering with astigmatism has a foot ball shaped eye. When light enters such an eye, it refracts longer in one direction than the other. So, only one part of the object is seen. Objects that are at a distance can be blurred or wavy.
In some people, astigmatism is a hereditary problem, and is present from birth. Sometimes, the eyelids put pressure on the cornea, and it may result in astigmatism.
Some of the common symptoms that people face when they have astigmatism are headaches. Most kids complain of headaches while they are reading. This could be a big indicator that they have astigmatism. Other symptoms also include fatigue and blurred vision. Children with astigmatism may not be able to tell if their vision is blurred, especially while reading. They still are not able to tell the difference between normal and abnormal vision patterns. They may come to terms with the blurred vision as normal.
