Glaucoma is quite a common disorder of the eye, and is also associated with aging. Most of the patients, who have glaucoma, are above the age of 35. If glaucoma is a repeating episode for some people, it is called chronic glaucoma.
The fluid that collects is due to a gradual discharge getting collected in the front compartment of the eye. The main reason for the non drainage of fluids can be blockage in the draining ducts.
In a regular eye, the fluid called aqueous humor flows out to the front compartment of the eye and should drain through the ducts. When the draining does not happen, it keeps collecting there. As the disease progresses, the pressure gets higher. There are several delicate nerves and cells that can get damaged due to the building of pressure behind the eye.
The level of glaucoma is measured with the help of angles. Narrow angles cause more severe problems than any other type. Narrow angles have always been noticed along with liver problems in patients. Glaucoma and liver dysfunction may be connected, but it is one of the rare causes. Not many people are diagnosed with both the conditions. However, the relevant studies indicate that the liver dysfunction can cause fluid retention in the eyes and lead to glaucoma. They could also be an inherited disease or caused due to a defective chromosome. There are very few known causes for the coexistence of the condition. Researches also have found glaucoma as a result of liver-related diseases such as hepatitis, and yellow fever.
