You can chest pain for different reasons. The most obvious reason for getting chest pain is a heart attack but there are people who experience severe upper chest pain with inhalation. This can be due to many reasons. You can experience severe upper chest pain with inhalation due to injury to the ribs or chest muscle or due to infection in the chest wall muscles. |
Some of the reasons for severe upper chest pain with inhalation are as follows:
- Sometimes people can have a disease known as pleurisy. This is inflammation of the membrane that lines the chest wall internally and when you have pleurisy, you can experience severe upper chest pain with inhalation.
- Having pulmonary embolism can also cause severe chest pain with inhalation. This condition occurs when the artery of the lung gets blocked and you will feel a sudden and sharp pain which either starts or gets worse when you breathe.
- Costochondritis is the inflammation that occurs between the breastbone and the ribs. It is seen more commonly in adolescents and pre-teens but anyone can get it. It occurs due to viral infection, upper respiratory infection or frequent coughing. In rare cases, people experience upper chest pain with inhalation when they have costochondritis.
- Another cause for severe upper chest pain with inhalation is precordial catch syndrome. The reason for this syndrome is not known but is seen mostly in adolescents. When a person has precordial catch syndrome, he will experience a very intense pain in the chest or the back. The pain only occurs when the person is inhaling and it can last for few minutes before fading.
