The Role Of Diet In The Coronary Heart Disease

Diet plays a very important role in controlling coronary heart disease. The aim of a diet plan is to keep cholesterol levels in check and also control high blood pressure and high glucose levels which attribute to coronary heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, a healthy adult must not consume over 300 mg of cholesterol each day, and a person suffering from heart disease, on the other hand, should restrict it to only 200 mg each day.

Limiting the cholesterol intake from animal based food and saturated fats is mandatory. Animal food such as fish, lean meat and poultry contain cholesterol. Therefore, all these should be taken in very small quantities. In order to keep a check on cholesterol levels, one must also ensure limited fat intake and consuming fat-free food items like low fat milk. This helps in controlling the intake of fat.

Since increased blood pressure is a common cause of coronary heart disease, eating diet that has less amount of salt is advisable. Diet must include lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. All these help in controlling blood pressure.

The next thing to consider is the intake of sugars and simple carbohydrate. Those who consume a lot of sugar in various forms have the risk of developing diabetes and also high levels of triglycerides. Diabetes and triglyceride levels both contribute to coronary heart disease. People suffering from diabetes must control the consumption of white breads, cakes, soft drinks and other food items which are rich in carbohydrates. Instead the diet should include whole wheat bread, brown rice and legumes that have a balanced amount of proteins and carbohydrates.

People having coronary heart disease must assure that they eat a healthy balanced diet which can assist them in managing weight.
