Treatment For Coronary Heart Disease

Coronary heart disease is not curable. However, with treatment and maintaining a healthy lifestyle one can reduce the risk of further complications. There is a broad series of medications which can help in treating coronary heart disease to a great extent. The medications are aimed at reducing factors which result in coronary heart diseases, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels etc.

The most common medicines that are prescribed by most of the doctors are aspirin, ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, statins for cholesterol lowering, clopidogrel, warfarin and nitroglycerine. Having these medicines regularly can reduce the risk of heart problems to a great extent. These medicines have to be taken for a long term.

When the condition has worsened, doctors may advise surgery. There are various types of surgeries available depending on the condition. The doctor would advise angioplasty and stent implantation or bypass surgery or implantable cardiac defibrillators.

Angioplasty involves using a special balloon that helps in improving the flow of blood to the heart. This balloon opens up the blocked artery from inside and is very good in treating angina. Once the angioplasty is successfully performed, a special expandable metal tube called stent is inserted inside the arty to keep the blocked artery expanded.

Bypass surgery, often termed as CABG, referring to coronary artery bypass graft, is a procedure that is aimed at redirecting the flow of blood around the affected region of the heart. This allows blood to flow unobstructed to the heart muscles instead of flowing through the severely blocked artery.

Implantable cardiac defibrillator is fixed for those people who experience a changed heart rhythm usually after a heart attack. This condition is termed as arrhythmia. Such a problem can be life threatening, and hence, demands for immediate treatment. The device that is implanted into the chest is connected to the heart. It controls the rhythm of heart.
