Macular degeneration refers to loss if vision due to degeneration of the macula in the retina. This occurs due to ageing or genetic inheritance. There is no medicine available for its cure, but further worsening of the condition can be slowed down by certain changes in the living-styles, intake of nutritional diet or by ingestion of supplements and vitamins. ‘Lucentis’ is regarded as a drug which prevents further progression of degeneration.
This occurrence is more due to old age. Almost 30% of the people aged 75 and above suffer from this disorder. If this condition has been diagnosed in the early or intermediate stages, one should not feel that blindness will eventually occur. With due care, the individual can avert further deterioration.
Only about 6 to 8% of those in the aged category will suffer from advanced stage of this condition. Even then the individual will not loose complete vision. Instead, only the central vision will be absent. The individual will still have the peripheral vision as before.
The treatment will require the individual to take supplements of zinc and anti-oxidants. Vitamin supplements benefits are moderate compared to zinc and anti-oxidants.
Wet macular degeneration can be treated using laser treatment or drugs.
Preventive care is one way to avert onset of macular degeneration. Periodical check-up of the eyes will help in diagnosing commencement of degeneration early. One should be watchful for symptoms like difficulty in adapting to darkness, reading with normal or low lighting, recognizing faces or loss of crystal clear vision.
Ingestion of supplements should be commenced only after consulting a doctor.
