Food That Triggers Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a condition in the joints wherein the cartilage of the joints which provides cushioning effect gets worn out causing pain. Along with Exercising, a change in the diet with reduced intake of certain allergens is necessary.

Eminent doctors observe that allergens in food will continue the cycle of degeneration and inflammation till they are detected and eliminated.

Some foods which are known to worsen osteoarthritis and should be avoided are:

  • Wheat: Wheat and other foods in this category like barley, oats and rye contain proteins called gliadin and gluten which are allergenic. Many people having osteoarthritis who eat these foods regularly have been tested and found allergic to this family of grains. On stopping their intake, most of them obtained relief from the pain and other symptoms.
  • Dairy: Proteins are available in all forms of dairy products. Milk comes in many varieties like skimmed, whole fat and low fat which are designed for people having intolerance to lactose. The four proteins which are triggers for aggravating osteoarthritis are beta lactoglobulin, casein, bovine serum albumin and alpha lactoglobulin. On stopping their intake, patients observed relief from further aggravation. A physician should advice such stoppages least it affects the nutritional requirement of the body.
  • Night-shade vegetables: Vegetables which contain alkaloid or solanine are regarded as triggers for osteoarthritis. Some examples are potatoes, hot and green pepper, tobacco, paprika and tomato. These disrupt the balance of calcium between the soft tissue and the skeleton. Solanine gets deposited on the connective tissues causing their degeneration and inflammation.
