A harmonious blend of science and technology has led to the development and production of stem cells. These scientific marvels have been studied extensively to cure numerous ailments. Treating genetic disorders at the fetal stage and immunizing people who are genetically prone to cancer are just a few applications of stem cell therapy. These cells are being studied to see whether they are effective in preventing the aggravation of Parkinson’s disease in adults. Stem cells have the ability to reproduce into numerous cells of a particular type required for the body when given an optimum environment to grow and multiply.
Parkinson’s disease is a condition where there is extensive damage to a nerve cell called substantia nigra found in the brain. This nerve cell produces dopamine, a neurotransmitter. Dopamine is responsible for regulating numerous mental and physical functions in the body. A decrease in this crucial neurotransmitter will lead to serious mental and physical disorders. Disturbed sleep, lack of memory, uncontrolled hand and leg movements, imbalance, difficulty in speaking, no facial expression are just a few conditions associated with the disease.
Stem cells are being extensively studied to check whether they could effectively replace the dead nerve cells, behave like substantia nigra and stimulate dopamine production in the body. The experimentations are in the stage of infancy. Numerous ethical and scientific hurdles need to be crossed in this regard.
Although stem cells can replicate in large numbers and become substantia nigra, there are increased chances of the disease spreading to the newly formed stem cells, thereby decreasing its efficacy and increasing the chances of aggravation.
