Parkinson’s disease is a very traumatic disorder for the patient and his family members. The affected individual will exhibit several physical and mental abnormalities making it a little difficult to get him under control. Numerous drugs have been developed to treat the disorder. On the flip side, these drugs can cause unwanted side effects affecting the person’s mental stability.
Parkinson’s disease is caused due to a decrease in dopamine levels. These substances are responsible for controlling the person’s mental and physical thoughts, emotions and actions. An imbalance in dopamine levels will make the affected individual react differently and absurdly. Hallucinations are common. The person might end up imagining things that do not even exist. The individual can become extremely paranoid and react violently due to some “perceived” threat. The person might tend up rejecting things that he/she is familiar with. A sense of betrayal, fearfulness and a feeling of insecurity will make the person react in an abnormal manner.
In some cases, drugs used for treating Parkinson’s disease have been found to induce such changes. The key here for the family members and the individual is to be patient with the physician until a proper combination of drugs is discovered for the individual.
The brain takes time to adjust itself to an imbalance cause of a particular neurotransmitter. An external administration of chemicals to correct the disorder will not be accepted immediately by the brain. Other underlying disease conditions like kidney, lung or liver failure can also result in a decreased dopamine levels. The physician has to find out the cause for the chemical imbalance and treat accordingly. Scientists are yet to find a safe drug to treat the disorder. Clozapine seems to be the only drug that has been found to relieve Parkinson’s symptoms. Excess usage of this drug causes a drop in white blood cell count reducing the immunity of the person drastically.
