Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disorder that results from a decreased dopamine production in the body. The nerve cells responsible for dopamine reduction in the brain are damaged, leading to a severe imbalance in neurotransmitters. This in turn causes serious physical and psychological defects in the affected person.
Rigidity, uncontrolled trembling, sleep disturbances, nightmarish experiences, uncontrolled movement of the body, imbalanced gait, hallucinations, paranoia, bradykinesia are a handful of symptoms associated with the disease. The person exhibits decreased vigor and movement. Apathy, depression and lack of facial expression are also observed. Several drugs have been formulated for correcting the dopamine levels in the body. Most of these drugs have additional side effects making it difficult to cure the disease successfully.
Parkinson’s does not affect the person’s life expectancy in any way. Numerous studies have rubbished claims that a person suffering from the disease will have a shorter life span than their normal healthy counterparts. An issue in “Movement Disorders” in March 2009 reported the following results:
- The rate of survival of a patient suffering from the disease for ten years is the same as that of a normal healthy individual.
- If person has been suffering for 15 to 20 years, his/her lifespan has reduced by a miniscule percentage.
- If the person experiences severe degenerative changes, there are chances of his lifespan decreasing drastically. This occurs if the person has failed to get appropriate treatment at the right time.
- Women suffering from Parkinson’s disease have a longer life span than their male counterparts.
- People suffering from imbalanced gait have a decreased lifespan as opposed to those that do not suffer from mobility problems.
