You cannot feel an ulcer externally. These wounds are formed deep inside the tissue and wall linings, and are therefore not detectable visually. However, you will experience unusual symptoms that will directly point towards an internal ulcer formation.
Esophagus, stomach, jejunum and duodenum are generally susceptible. The outer linings of these walls will erode. This in turn will expose the inner lying tissues to strong digestive juices and acids that normally circulate within the system. These substances are responsible for digesting the foodstuffs and breaking them down into smaller particles for easy absorption into the body. When these chemicals come in contact with the soft tissues, they will cause erosion leading to ulcer. Bleeding is observed in numerous cases.
Symptoms of ulcer are:
- Extreme pain in the stomach region
- Unexplained burning sensation leading to heartburn, due to erosion of esophageal walls
- Burning sensation in the stomach walls
- Bloody stools
- Nausea, vomiting with blood, loss of appetite
- Loss of weight
- A sour acidic reflex up to your throat causing regurgitation
If you notice any of the aforementioned symptoms, it is advisable to get a medical check up performed immediately. The doctor will analyze the inner linings of the digestive tract by inserting a small flexible tube fixed with a camera at its end. It will capture images internally and let the doctor observe any ulcer or wound formation. Blood tests are also useful in detecting ulcers. Abnormal levels of helicobacter pylori, a bacterium responsible for more than half of reported ulcer cases will establish the presence of ulcer. X-rays of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum will also reveal ulcer formation in some cases.
