The Cannes Film Festival was founded in 1946. It was first a private film festival that was held in Cannes, a small town to the south of France. This film festival has gained a lot of fame since then; and today, it is a world event. It is held every year over a period of 10 days. Cannes holds several other events during this time period.
The main event of the festival is a competition held for the best movies. Around twenty movies qualify for the competition, and one movie wins the prestigious Cannes award. The movies vie for the Palme d’Or, or Golden Palm Award, which is the most prestigious award out all the awards. All cultural backgrounds and countries are qualified to enter the competition. Movies that are not eligible for the competition are still aired at the festival. Some movies fall under the special screening faculty. Short films are also encouraged at the festival and about fifteen movies in that category are aired.
Several other events like night parties, social gatherings and merriment takes place as a part of the festival. Sometimes people have their own private parties at the festival. People form the movie industry use Cannes as a social networking event to promote their careers and business.
