The exact location of Transylvania in Romania is that it is situated in the central, northern and western part of the country. The Oriental Carpathian Mountain range separates Transylvania and Moldavia in the east, and the Meridional Carpathian Mountain range separates Transylvania from Walachia in the south.
The region of Transylvania is further sub-divided into four regions. There is Transylvania located in the center and at the east. This is the biggest sub-region. Then there is Maramures located in the north, Crisana in the north west and Banat in the south west region of Transylvania.
The capital of Transylvania is Cluj Napoca. However, there are other important cities in the region, namely Brasov, Timisoara, Oradea, and Baia Mare. In fact, all the cities are very popular with tourists for their culture and history. Some of the cities are also major industrial centers, especially for metal-work and steel.
According to archeologists, Transylvania has been inhabited since Inferior Paleolithic times, which was around 2 million BC. However, a stable population made its way here before the Neolithic period, which was around 6,000 to 5,000 BC.
In the first millennium BC, Thracians from the north came to Transylvania to establish dwellings here along with the Gettic tribes. Both tribes had the same language, faith and habits. The only difference was that the Thracians lived in the mountains and highlands, while the Getts lived on the plains of the Danube. These two tribes were the initial settlers of Transylvania.
