Mecca and Medina, two most important holy cities in western Arabia, gave birth to Islamic religion way back in seventh century. Majority of the population are Sunni Muslims, and they follow all the doctrines mentioned by Islam.Prophet Muhammad was the founder of Islam. He was born in the holy city of Mecca. Though both the cities are famous pilgrimage sites, they lost much of their importance when the Muslim Empire changed its capital in other destination.
Mecca, which was ruled by Ottoman dynasty, received limelight as pilgrimage, but most parts of Arabia having poor infrastructure failed to attract foreign empires. It was after 1745, when Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab, the famous Muslim reformer invited an alliance with Prince Muhammad Ibn Saud that political and religious alliance endured through several generations and helped in creating famous Saudi kingdoms in Arabia.
The doctrines and ideologies of Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab, better known as Wahhabis emphasized on the core concept that is unity of God. On the foundation of this puritanical yet attractive concept of Islamic belief, Muhammad Ibn Saud and his predecessors were able to invade much of central Arab and thereby establish their first Saudi kingdom. The Ottoman Empire was impelled to invade Arabia and capture the Saudi capital in the year 1818 after seizing Mecca and Medina.
It was after second Saudi kingdom was formed with Riyadh as the capital in 1824, when Saudis gained their control on exercising power, forming government bodies, administering justice and promoting Islam.
