Historical Events In Louisiana
Just like any other state of the US, Louisiana has had its own role to play in the American Civil War and various other revolutionary movements that took place in the history of the country. During the 15th and 16th centuries, there were several Native Indian settlements in Louisiana like Adai, Alabama, Appalachia and so on. |
It was in 1519 that the mouth of the Mississippi river was discovered in the state. In 1541, eventually the entire stretch of Mississippi River was discovered. Most of the discoveries were made by the native Indians. The discovered that the river flowed into the Pacific through the Gulf of Mexico. This was a great finding and opened up several options for trade.
In the 17th century, the first major import of black slaves began to the state. In 1729, the Natchez Indians Massacre took place which killed 250 people as per records. The Natchez Indian tribe is very popular for the discovery of the Natchez Trail that runs all the way to Tennessee and beyond. From 1756 to 1763 the State witnessed the French and Indian War, and there was a great dispute over land between the native Indians and Great Britain. When the US declared its independence on July 4, 1776, Louisiana was one of first states to be declared free. The southern part of Louisiana was bought by the US for a sum of 15 million dollars in the 18th century.
The great historic events of Louisiana are a study by itself and are very elaborate and there have been hundreds of more events that defined the state.
