History Of Mall Of America

The Mall of America, which is the biggest mall of the United States and the second biggest in the world, has a huge history as its precedent. It all started in the year 1982 when the Minnesota Vikings and the Twins, the professional baseball and football teams, moved to the Metrodome in Downtown. The previous stadium, Metropolitan of Bloomingdale stood unused. It is a 78-acre facility and was in prime locality. It was the prime site for real estate. The property was located one and a half mile from the airport.

It is connected through all major highways of Minnesota. After three years, the Bloomingdale Port Authority bought the site and started encouraging proposals for development. They gave serious considerations to office complexes, residential sector, visitor centers and retail or entertainment sector. They received several proposals and among them the 4th proposal was chosen, and that was from the Ghermezian Brothers. They signed an agreement with the Bloomington Port to develop the largest mall of the US. It was termed as the biggest retail and entertainment complex, second only to the West Edmonton Hall of Canada, which is the biggest mall in the world.

June 14th of 1989 was a remarkable day in the history of Minnesota because the Triple Five Group and the Ghermezian Brothers signed a pact to develop the mall. Minnesota is known for its extremely cold winds and people started asking why Minnesota. Despite the negative media attention and various detractors, the mall started to make consistent progress. It started operations in 1992 and never looked back ever since.

When the Ghermezian Brothers started to build the mall, their main aim was to construct a major tourist destination. It was much more than a shopping mall. There were amusement parks and huge aquariums incorporated. It offered visitors entertainment, sightseeing and also shopping. There were movie theaters also inside the mall. The Mall of America took off with a big bang and exceeded expectations in the first year itself. It was the first in the industry to combine retail and entertainment in one area, and since the concept being new, it took off very well. Several other malls across the United States followed their example.

Mall of America currently is the shining star of Minnesota. It attracts tourists from all over the world, including Canada, England, Ireland, Japan, Korea, India, France and Germany. At the same time the mall of America is an architectural masterpiece of the 21st century.
