What Year Did Tennessee Become A State ?

Tennessee became a state in the year 1796 when it was inducted into the Union as the sixteenth state. It was the first settlement that was made into a state under the aegis of the then US federal government. The starting point of the state was taken from the highest part of the Stone Mountain, exactly at the place where the state of Virginia bisects it; and all the land as well as water bodies located towards the west of mountain went on to form Tennessee state.

The history of the formation of Tennessee as a state is not that pleasant, but it is a reality that we all have to face. Between the years 1838 and 1839, seventeen thousand Cherokees along with two thousand of their slaves were uprooted and pushed out of the region by then US president Martin Van Buren. The US military made these people march from the so-called emigration depots located towards the eastern region of Tennessee. The Native Americans and their slaves has to march towards the Indian Territory that was quite far and located towards the west of Arkansas. However, this paved way for further settlements to be established and gave rise to urbanization.

Then in the year 1920, on 18 August, Tennessee was the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment of the US Constitution. This Amendment gave suffrage to women. However, even then in the state racial equality and gender equality was not present and as a result most of the poor whites and African Americans were not made part of the electorate.

So, based on historical facts and events, it can be said that Tennessee attained statehood in the year 1796.
