The country does not have any mountains, but is full of natural forests and rivers.Due to its topography, Uruguay experiences a mild climate right round the year. Usually in summer the country has an average temperature ranging from 70 degrees Fahrenheit to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. In winter, the average temperature ranges from 50 degrees Fahrenheit to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Usually it rains right through the year, but in autumn it tends to rain more.
The major cities of Uruguay are Montevide, Paysandu, Las Piedras, Tacuarembo and Rivera. Montevideo is the largest city in the country, and it is also the capital and main port. The city has many beaches like Punta Gorda, Pocitos, Playa Verde and Buceo. In addition, there are many historical buildings, monuments and museums that the city has to offer.
Paysandu is the third largest city in Uruguay. It was founded by a priest named Policarpo Sandu and 12 Indian families who had converted to Christianity. Today, the city is a major industrial hub, and is home to textile factories, breweries and tanneries. Each year, the city celebrates a beer festival known as Semana de la Cerveza.
Las Piedras has a lot of historical importance for Uruguayans. It is the city where the Battle of Las Piedras was fought against the Spanish in 1811. This battle is where the Spanish forces were defeated decisively. The city is also famous for horse racing and ostrich farming.
Tacuarembo is a traditional city with farms and gauchos. In addition, the city is famous because it is the birthplace of the renowned Tango singer Carlos Gardel.
Rivera is situated along the border of Brazil and it is home to the former president of Uruguay, Aparicio Mendez. He was born in this city.
